Tell President Obama: Don't pass the buck on the climate crisis

Dear President Obama, As the planet heats up, so should the ambition coming out of the climate agreement that will be negotiated in Paris at the end of this year. I am writing to urge you, as the President of the world’s largest historic polluter, to push for a binding agreement and commit to targets that are based on science and justice. Taken collectively, the voluntary commitments already announced by countries ahead of the climate negotiations are not rigorous enough to satisfy the limited goals of the climate Convention: to limit global warming to 2°C. They are not even close to keeping us to 1.5°C, a level which would already have devastating impacts. As greenhouse gases accumulate in the atmosphere with every passing day, it is unconscionable to justify this shortfall by promising to return to the negotiating table in five years to ‘ratchet up’ commitments. This is immoral, and scientifically unsound. As the world’s largest historic polluter, the United States’ commitment must be significantly improved before the Paris negotiations, not five years later. The United States must lead the world in addressing this planetary crisis, and we urge you to do this by making a commitment commensurate with our historic responsibility and respective capability. I thank you for the action you have taken thus far to address climate change. I urge you to ratchet up the commitment that the United States has already put forth this year, not five years from now.
