If you think those two consequences are contradictory, it could be that you believe that the main factor affecting products' retail prices is how much the products cost the store. That economic theory was based on the assumption of so much competition that it would compel stores to pass savings along to the customers.

Nothing like that is true nowadays. After decades of mergers and megamergers, and data companies that enable all stores easily to sync up prices without directly communicating about them, competition hardly affects what stores can charge.

That is a positive change, but they need to understand that if you run in the same circles as Nazis — in the circles that have vicious ideas that attract Nazis — you will have opportunity after opportunity to take up with someone who is a Nazi. Look how many Republicans associate willingly with Elon Musk, or the monster in the White House. They can hardly avoid

I praise the old ACLU for defending freedom of speech for everyone, to express any views whatsoever — even including Nazis. I cite Nazis as an example here because their views are as vicious as can be. I am sure the ACLU's leaders judged them that way too. But they recognized that when you start denying people's freedom of speech because you dislike their views, that is the start of tyranny — and people who criticize the powerful in any way are likely to be on the receiving end.

I am not surprised that the extent of support for Nazi views in some countries today goes hand in hand with hatred and cruelty for many disprivileged groups.

Recognizing the freedom to advocate vicious views does not imply ceasing to castigate them.

In my letter I said that this should be in addition to taxing the wealth they already have.

His article leads me to a speculation: he wants to keep his fanatical, blind-to-reality followers believing that he is constantly winning against every adversary. He figures that that will keep them giving him blind support.

To say that everyone will receive a payoff if a certain side wins an election is not exactly buying their votes, but it has much in common with that.

From past experience, when the bullshitter promises to give something worth money to citizens in general, he probably won't ever do it. He might change the plan so that the money ends up in the hands of rich people instead, like what happened to the "refunds" for increased tariffs that were canceled by a court. (These were refunded to importers, which had already collected these same amount from individual customers — so the importers got paid twice and the customers not at all.)

But I don't think this is mainly intended to influence voters. It may even backfire, there. I suspect the purpose is to pressure Republican elected officials to stand by the corrupter, lest committed magat voters reject them.

There are many forms of feedback in climate parameters. I expect positive feedback to have devastating consequences as our generation of greenhouse gases increases.

Since we don't know about all of these feedback effects, it is hard to make overall predictions. But this general conclusion is likely to be valid:

The paper also reminds us why every fraction of a degree matters. The more we warm the planet, the more we risk activating natural processes that add still more greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. This makes rapid reductions in fossil fuel emissions even more urgent.

There should be safety standards for driverless vehicles, and they should reject vehicles like this.

The term "terrorists" clearly fits them. I dislike the term "ethnic cleansing" because it is clearly a euphemism coined by perpetrators to whitewash their crime by suggesting that the victims are mere dirt. But I have not found a good replacement term.

All Israel's colonies in Palestinian territory violate international law. Israel divides them into two categories: the ones Israel has officially authorized, and the ones it has not (though in practice it winks at them anyway). I am not sure whether "illegal" here covers all of these colonies or only the ones Israel has not officially authorized. The sanctions ought to cover both kinds of "settlements".

Modern right-wing governments redirect increasing fractions of produced wealth from the non-rich to the rich. That disconnects overall economic growth from the well-being of most people, which generally decreases. So the growth figure Modi is accused of manipulating may actually not have much to do with prosperity.

Right-wing extremists frequently use crimes against those they call "enemies" as tools for radicalization. Here they are using the murder of Afghanis as their tool. Anyone who condemns that murder, they attack.

Hastie responded by condemning the evil values of these right-wing extremists and refusing to tolerate atrocities by Australian soldiers.

If I were Australian, I would not support a plutocratist party overall. Plutocratist policies are driving the non-rich into penury. But I have to admire Hastie's adamant support for the laws of war.
